Kateryna Korovina comes from the village of Pishchane near Starobilsk in the Luhansk region. She wrote articles, was interested in poetry, and advocated for humanitarian aid in Ukraine despite the Russian occupation.
Abduction and Sentencing
In March 2024, Kateryna was interrogated for several hours by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). Under psychological pressure, threats, and intimidation, she was forced to sign a prepared “confession.” On June 10, 2024, armed Russian security forces finally broke into her apartment, arrested Kateryna, and abducted her. The arrest was filmed and broadcast on Russian propaganda television.
On February 17, 2025, Kateryna was sentenced to ten years in prison for allegedly financing extremism and terrorism. The case was based on money transfers totalling approximately 10 euros. Kateryna herself stated that these donations were intended solely for humanitarian purposes.
Conditions of Detention and Health
Kateryna is currently being held in Pre-Trial Detention Centre No. 1 in Rostov-on-Don. She is housed there separately from Russian prisoners, along with other Ukrainian women also charged with “extremism.”
According to the court, Kateryna suffers from depression as a result of the conditions of detention and the psychological strain. Nevertheless, in her letters, she displays strength and hope, writing poetry and emphasising that she will never betray her homeland.
