Ukrainian taxi driver abducted
Kirill Moriev (ru. Kirill Moriev)
Date of birth: 29 November 1997
Missing since: 18 August 2022
Last known location: Chrustalnyj (Krasnyj Lutsch) town, Luhansk region
Unlawful sentence: 19 years’ imprisonment
Kirill Moriev comes from the town of Khrustalny and worked as a taxi driver. He is strongly pro-Ukrainian and openly expressed his criticism of the Russian attack and occupation on the internet and in public.
Abduction
Due to his obvious disapproval of Russia, Kirill was arrested by representatives of the occupying power on 18 August 2022. His flat was searched in the most aggressive manner without any reason.
Kirill’s parents immediately hired a solicitor, but it took a month before he was able to gain access to his client. The solicitor was biased towards Kirill, made negative comments about his pro-Ukrainian views and urged him to make false statements, arguing that this would prevent him from being tortured further.
The Russian authorities charged Kirill with alleged espionage. On 26 January 2023, a closed-door session of the so-called Supreme Court of Luhansk was held. At this sham trial, there were no witnesses or debates, and Kirill was arbitrarily sentenced to 19 years in prison under strict conditions. Kirill is currently being held in a penal colony in the town of Vakhruchevo in the Luhansk region.
From the time of Kirill’s arrest until the verdict was announced, his family members were prohibited from contacting him in any way, including letters and visits. It was not until June 2024 that his wife was able to visit him for an extended period and reported on his poor health.
Health
During his imprisonment in a Russian remand prison, Kirill lost 21 kg (his weight dropped from 104 kg to 83 kg). He was brutally tortured, especially during the first month of his imprisonment. Wires were attached to his fingers, toes and earlobes and he was subjected to electric shocks. In addition, a plastic bag was placed over his head, he was choked until he lost consciousness and beaten with hands, feet and other instruments. He was also threatened with the killing of his family.
The inhumane treatment severely damaged his teeth and worsened his scoliosis. The illegal detention, during which psychological and physical violence was used over a long period of time, has had a devastating impact on his health.
