In the city of Mogaung in Kachin State (Myanmar), unknown persons shot dead Baptist pastor Nammye Hkun Jaw Li on March 18, 2024. The 47-year-old leaves behind a wife and three children. The former representative of the local “Kachin Baptist Congress” had protested against the attacks by the Myanmar army on the civilian population. In the northern state, the military is taking action against the separatist rebels of the “Kachin Independence Army”. Around a third of the population is Christian. Churches and Christian organizations have already been targeted, as have hundreds of civilians. Thousands of Christians have had to flee their villages to escape the attacks.

In February 2023, the German section of the ISHR together with the German Protestant news agency IDEA presented the former General Secretary of the “Kachin Baptist Congress” Hkalam Samson as “Prisoner of the Month”.

On April 7 of last year, he was sentenced to six years in prison for allegedly supporting the rebels. Four months earlier, Baptist pastor Thian Lian Sang had already received a 23-year prison sentence for “terrorism”, although he is known to be apolitical and non-violent. In January 2024, the German section of the ISHR together with the German Protestant news agency IDEA also named him “Prisoner of the Month”.
