Nicaragua: Christians die in prison

Mauricio Alonso Prieto, who was imprisoned with Pastor Rudy Palacios Vargas, founder of the ecclesiastical community “La Roca de Nicaragua,” died in custody under unclear circumstances. He was detained with his son of the same name during the police raids in Jinotepe (Carazo district); his wife, who had been briefly detained, was soon released. His relatives received news of Prieto’s death on August 25, 2025, via a call from the Institute of Forensic Medicine. According to observers, the main focus of the arrests and searches was Pastor Palacios Vargas, “Prisoner of the Month for October” by the ISHR and IDEA.

According to media reports, the committed Catholic and lawyer Carlos Cárdenas Zepeda, who formerly served as an advisor to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in negotiations with the socialist Ortega regime, also died. He had previously been imprisoned several times and even tortured. He was arrested again on August 13, 2025, and died in custody on August 29. His wife was subsequently instructed to bury him immediately. She received only the sealed coffin, no death certificate, and a funeral service was prohibited.
