Nigeria is starved of heroes. The nation’s hardened objection to courage dissuades the possibility of heroism. From the partial clownery of the judicial arm to the pseudo-gerontocracy of the executive leadership, little space is left for voices uncomfortable with the status. Yet, in 2020,   Rinu Oduala stepped into this void with courage that defied her young age. Her voice became a lighthouse during the dark days of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality.

As a media strategist, Rinu weaponized her digital skills to amplify the cries of countless Nigerian youth. She coordinated with the Feminist Coalition to provide food, medical care, and legal aid to protesters facing government opposition. Her Twitter became a command center where international journalists could find real-time updates about the movement.

When the Lekki Toll Gate massacre occurred, she risked everything to ensure the world knew what was happening. After Twitter was banned in Nigeria following her activism, Rinu found new ways to continue her fight for justice.

Today, Rinu’s actions have inspired a generation of youthful activists across Africa, eager to be heard, eager to push for change in spaces of oppressive normalcy, utilizing social media.
