
The Psychological Cost of Restricting Girls’ Access to Education
Introduction
The human brain is capable of undergoing complex transformations due to certain environmental factors, such ascognitive, emotional, and behavioral influences. The presence of plasticity within the brain allows neural reorganizationto enhance the processes of learning and memory. [1]. Childhood experiences shape the development of the centralnervous system by modulating synaptic connections, neurotransmitter activity, and overall systems maturation [2].
Aggressive experiences like stress and trauma have been shown to cause long-lasting neurobiological alterations thatmake individuals more susceptible to mental health conditions. [3].
Providing adequate educational opportunities in tribal regions and rural north regions of Pakistan bearing the greatestlimitation for females due to socioeconomic traditions leading to severe psychological and neurobiologicalconsequences. These barriers originate from deeply established social beliefs, lack of funds, and poor education systemswhich together contribute to the disregarding of women [4]. Chronic stress along with social isolation suffered by girlscan drastically change the normal functioning of the brain, making it more susceptible to psychological disorders likedepression, anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) [5]. The relationship between non-verbalcommunication, thinking skills, and self-esteem affects the long-term psychosocial health profoundly [6]. This articlereflects the neuropsychological aspects of these disorders and the impact of systemic gender inequality on thefunctioning of the brain and behavior.
The Neurological Effects of Gender Based Educational Deficit
Lack of education and social deprivation profoundly affect the social and mental development of a person,especially for girls suffering from systemic discrimination. These reasons may lead to serious mental health problemsand the development of the brain, reinforcing the imperative to take women and girl’s needs into account in the designand provision of educational services [7]. Prolonged exposure to stress and deprivation can disrupt critical neuralcircuits, leading to significant cognitive and emotional impairments. Early-life stress (ELS) can shift criticaldevelopmental periods, resulting in premature maturation of brain regions such as the visual cortex, which may lead tolong-term functional deficiencies [8]. Prenatal stress have also
been associated in alterations in brain structure/function, affecting cognition and emotional regulation [9]. Chronic stresscan halt important neural connection causing severe cognitive and
emotional dysregulation. Early-life stress (ELS) can alter complex stages in development and lead to enhancedmaturation of brain regions including the visual cortex, which can produce persistent functional disorders [10, 11].
Girls are confined to household duties, their body’s hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis can becomeunbalanced causing them to feel stressed for a long time and lead to higher levels of cortisol that can negatively affect thehippocampus, a part of the brain involved in memories and learning activity.[12]. In addition, the prefrontal cortex(PFC), a part of the brain that helps in making decisions and problem solving Under development of PFC result in lackof decision making and problem solving .This issue is especially significant during the teenage years, leading to PFCmaturation. [13]. The amygdala is essential for emotional behavior, especially fear and anxiety regulation. Hyperactivityof the amygdala is associated with increased anxiety and emotional dysregulation, leading to the development ofdisorders such as PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD) [14, 15].
The neurobiological alterations involved vulnerability greatly affect behavior, promoting submissive bodyposture, loss of self-assurance, and withdrawal from control over one’s life. The shifts are often based on disturbed neuralcommunication and stress reactions, which can lead to different psychological and behavioral symptoms. Girls who havegrown up in stressed environments related to education and social inclusion show more developed neural integration,equalized neurotransmitter concentration, and resilience to stress. This development is vital for the effective coping withdifficulties.[16]. Awareness of such neuropsychological inequalities is very important for designing focused interventionsreducing the long-term consequences of education deprivation, allowing for cognitive and emotional recovery ofimpaired individuals.

Chronic exposure to stress, cognitive neglect, and restricted social interactions significantly disrupt thehypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to elevated cortisol levels that adversely affect hippocampal function,essential for memory and learning. This dysregulation is linked to various neurological disorders, including depressionand Alzheimer’s disease, highlighting the critical interplay between stress and cognitive decline [17]. Epigenetic modifications play a crucial rolein the inheritance of trauma, particularly affecting stress- regulation genes. These modifications can lead to heightenedanxiety responses and maladaptive coping mechanisms in the daughters of women who have experienced deprivation ortrauma [18]. The relationship between educational stimulation and neural plasticity is critical in shaping cognitiveabilities and mental health outcomes. Insufficient educational experiences can lead to diminished executive functioning,cognitive flexibility, and problem-solving skills, which in turn heighten vulnerability to mental disorders such as majordepressive disorder and PTSD. This relationship underscores the importance of educational environments in fosteringcognitive development and emotional regulation [19–21]. Addressing psychological issues in children and adolescentsnecessitates targeted interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), neuroplasticity-based educationalprograms, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives. These approaches aim to reshape maladaptive thoughtpatterns, enhance cognitive growth, and foster emotional resilience, respectively [22]. Understanding theneuropsychological cost of gender-based educational deprivation is crucial for developing effective policies andinterventions. Gender disparities in education not only affect academic performance but also have profound implicationsfor mental health and social adaptability. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach that considers thepsychological, social, and educational dimensions of gender deprivation [23].
Comparative Analysis: Restricted vs. Empowered Girls
The comparison between girls raised in restrictive environments and those from progressive, urban areas revealssignificant neurological and psychological disparities. Research indicates that early family experiences, particularlymaternal support, play a crucial role in cognitive development, with stronger effects observed in girls from supportivebackgrounds [24].
In contrast, girls in restrictive settings often face psychological abuse and neglect, which can lead to long-term mentalhealth issues [25].

Understanding these neurobiological implications is crucial fordeveloping effective interventions that promote mental well-being and cognitive growth.
