TOPIC: TACKLING THE EVIL OF MILITARISM

Introduction

ISHR has dedicated the third Thursday of every month to holding Twitter Spaces as part of our education and knowledge sharing series. In the Twitter spaces, ISHR hosts Human Rights defenders, government officials, activists, academicians and experts to share their knowledge on a particular issue while putting into consideration their specific contexts. The Twitter spaces have not only been popular but have also enhanced our engagement with various communities of Huma Rights players. We continue to use these spaces for advocacy, campaigns. Knowledge sharing and in the bid to reach more people. In the same ambit, the ISHR secretariat has arranged Twitter Spaces for January 2023.

The space will be held on the 26th of January 2023 at 5:00PM CET.

Rationale of the Topic

The topic has been informed by the perpetual wars that have bedeviled the world with no sign of slowing down—putting into factor the most recent on European soil. Whereas a number of international bodies such as the United Nations, the African Union, among others have a core mandate of fostering unity and harmony among nations and people to prevent occurrences of war, military conquests continue to raise their ugly heads. In the forthcoming Twitter Space, we seek to extrapolate the causes of these military activities that are destabilizing world peace.

Our Panel of experts will help us dissect the following points in relation to the evil of militarism:

  1. How do you understand militarism in the contemporary World?
  2. What are the causes of this culture of militarism that the world is experiencing today?
  3. Give the state of militarism in the country/continent where you work/reside.
  4. Is there a solution to this evil of militarism?
  5. Have the international bodies such as the UN failed to ensure World Peace?
  6. What is the place of individuals in preventing militarism?

The Twitter Spaces take on a panel discussion model which is then followed by contributions from the audience. The main panelists shall be 4-5. The panelists will majorly reference the above talking points as guided by the moderator where after, the listeners from the audience will also be given an opportunity to have their say.
