What the Ambassadors Are Saying: Amplifying Youth Voices for a Better Tomorrow
In a world where the median age in regions like sub-Saharan Africa hovers around 19, while parts of Europe are grappling with aging populations, the urgency to empower and engage youth in the Global South is clearer than ever. Today’s youth, who form the majority in many developing countries, are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the changemakers of today. The International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) recognizes this and has made it a priority to support young leaders in their local communities, fostering impact and enabling change through its Ambassadors Program.
Why Youth Voices Matter
Consider this: more than 60% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa is under the age of 25, compared to less than 30% in the Global North. The Global South is brimming with untapped potential, yet systemic barriers often limit opportunities for youth to contribute meaningfully to societal development. Despite these challenges, young people have historically demonstrated an incredible ability to drive progress.
Take Wangari Maathai, for instance. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate from Kenya began her environmental activism as a young woman, eventually founding the Green Belt Movement to combat deforestation and empower rural women. Or Malala Yousafzai, whose courageous fight for girls’ education in Pakistan inspired a global movement and earned her the Nobel Peace Prize at just 17. Across Latin America, figures like Greta Salinas are using their voices to advocate for climate justice and indigenous rights. These examples underscore the transformative power of youth when given the tools, platforms, and support they need.
But the fight is far from over. The ISHR Ambassadors Program exists to amplify these voices, offering young people the skills and networks they need to make a difference.
A Platform for Change
The ISHR Ambassadors Program is more than just an initiative; it’s a movement. This fully remote program invites participants aged 18-35 to join a global network of human rights defenders and changemakers. Over eight weeks of intensive training and workshops, participants develop skills in advocacy, campaign design, and community engagement. They also receive a €300 stipend to support internet access and campaign projects, ensuring inclusivity for individuals from marginalized and underserved communities.
“The Ambassadors Program transformed my perspective on human rights advocacy,” says Joseph Obinna Okwesili, an ISHR Ambassador from Nigeria. “It empowered me to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, sparking meaningful conversations and inspiring collective action. Today, I am proud to see the ripple effect of our efforts.”

A Call to Women and Marginalized Groups
Despite making up a significant proportion of the youth population, young women in the Global South often face disproportionate challenges, from educational barriers to systemic gender inequality. Yet their voices are crucial in the fight for human rights. Women like Wangari Maathai and Malala Yousafzai have shown that when women lead, communities thrive. The ISHR Ambassadors Program is committed to empowering women and individuals from marginalized groups, including indigenous communities, youth in conflict zones, and those living in remote or underserved areas.
We believe that diversity is strength. By fostering a collaborative environment that includes people of different genders, ethnicities, and experiences, the program creates a richer tapestry of ideas and solutions for tackling human rights issues globally.
The Campaign for Change
Each Ambassador is tasked with designing a community-specific campaign to address a pressing issue. Whether it’s raising awareness about climate change, advocating for gender equality, or combating misinformation, these campaigns are the cornerstone of the program. Participants identify key challenges in their communities and develop actionable strategies to address them. The campaigns are not only a training ground for leadership and advocacy but also a direct contribution to social change.
