FORCED LABOR IN THE GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAINS

21–45 million people worldwide are trapped in some form of slavery and 20.9 million people are subject to forced labor

The Secretary General of ISHR addressed a webinar titled “Forced Labor in the Global Supply Chain,” convened by Kharon x Descartes where he shed light on the gravity of forced labor. The S.G. took participants through the statistics of forced labor and its different forms. In his statement, he is categorical in calling forced labor ‘slavery.’

He noted that 21–45 million people worldwide are trapped in some form of slavery and 20.9 million people are subject to forced labor. He noted that this inhuman practice affects the vulnerable people most with over a quarter of the world’s slaves being children. In ending his talk, he called upon a clear-minded system to be in a position to detect the ‘skilful system of cover-up’ that the perpetrators employ in their illegal business.
